What is a CSAT?

A Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT) is a mental health professional who has received specialized training and certification in the assessment and treatment of sex addiction and related intimacy disorders. The CSAT® program, developed by Dr. Patrick Carnes and administered by the International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals (IITAP), is widely recognized as a leading credential in the field of sex addiction recovery.

CSATs are trained to help individuals and couples navigate the complex emotional, relational, and behavioral challenges associated with compulsive sexual behavior. This can include issues such as:

  • Pornography addiction

  • Infidelity and compulsive affairs

  • Problematic use of sex or sexual behavior

  • Trauma-related intimacy disorders

  • Partner betrayal trauma

What sets CSATs apart is their trauma-informed approach. Many people struggling with compulsive sexual behavior also have underlying issues such as childhood trauma, attachment wounds, or co-occurring addictions. CSATs use a structured, evidence-based treatment model that addresses these deeper issues while supporting long-term recovery and relational healing. Whether you are seeking help for yourself or as the partner of someone struggling with sex addiction, a CSAT can offer compassionate, expert guidance on the path to healing and restoration.
